Horgan happy at point gained for Town

-

MANAGER Robbie Horgan took some satisfaction from Drogheda Town’s scoreless draw on Sunday despite the Marian Park side being up against bottom club Ballyfermot United.

Victory would have seen Town moved joint top of the table with Kilbarrack United, albeit with three more games played, but Horgan was happy enough as his severely depleted side kept a second consecutive clean sheet to make it 10 points out of 12 from their last four games.

The scoreline might suggest this was a dour game, but in truth it was anything but and any neutrals would have enjoyed the open nature of the 90 minutes.

Perhaps the best opportunity of the first half fell to Town’s Italian forward Michele Corsi who latched onto a Scott Byrne cross but struck the ball nearly too well as it rose over the crossbar.

Roy Kierans also went close for the visitors, while the defence held firm against a Ballyfermot side who hadn’t failed to hit the net in their previous six outings.

Both sides were out of luck in the second half as each probed for the vital breakthrough. The home team hit the post from a free kick, while Town felt they should have had a penalty, claiming for hand-ball as a Marty Walsh effort was blocked right on the goal-line.

In the end it was honours even, with Dean Haggins starring on his return to the Town midfield and Ciaran Cluskey Kelly and Barry Kelly immense at the heart of their defence. DROGHEDA TOWN: Alex O’Reilly, Dave McTeggart, Ciaran Cluskey Kelly, Barry Kelly, Andy Hickey, Scott Byrne, Dean Haggins, Stevie Waters, Michele Corsi, Neil Donnelly, Jordan Harmon Kelly. Subs: Sanele Duma, Paul Emmett, Marty Walsh, Dean Smith.
