IT’S been a good week for the basketball squads at Our Lady’s College Greenhills after two Under-16 teams recorded victories in the SSA League.

On Thursday Presentation College from Terenure made the journey to Boyneside to take on the Cadette A division 1 team and it was the visitors who drew first blood with a basket from the tip-off.

However, Leah Bastianelli wasted no time in getting her side off the mark and with Ofu Obhakhan, Ava Prendergast and Oyin Adelegan also chipping in the side led 10-9 at the first break.

In the second quarter Lynn Victory scored four of her team’s six points, at the end of which Terenure had a 17-16 advantage. However, quarter three saw the home side go on a scoring spree, hitting 19 points.

Ruby Matthews was in sparkling form in this quarter, hitting 10 points, and the scoreboard now read 35-27 in Our Lady’s favour.

Oyin Adelegan was a thorn in the side of Presentation’s top player, who scored 19 points, but found herself on the wrong end of an unsportsmanlike foul when she became frustrated with Adelegan’s pressure defence.

A further 10 points from the home side in the final quarter sealed a 45-31 win, with Ava Prendergast outstanding on the day.

On Friday the U-16 Cadette C division 2 team travelled to Coolock to take on Mercy College. Chantelle Gallagher was her team’s only scorer in the first period, with three points, but a better second quarter, with Katie Russell playing some great defence, saw a point separate the teams at half-time, 13-14.

Quarter three did not go to plan and the visitors went into the final quarter four points adrift, but a change to zone defense turned the game around. Mercy were unable to penetrate to the basket, and with Gallagher, Rachel Woods and Ava Scanlon rebounding strongly Our Lady’s scored 10 points in the final quarter to win 26-22.

U-16 CADETTE A: Catherine Grey; Oyin Adelegan 7pts; Leah Bastianelli 4; Shona Bradley; Eimear Clarke 2; Eimear Faulkner; Holly Garry; Bronagh Lane 2; Ruby Matthews 10; Ofu Obhakhan 2; Ava Prendergast 14; Maia Savage; Lynn Victory 4.
