THE death took place in Killeshill Parish, County Tyrone, Dungannon of Fr James Crowley (pictured) on November 20th 2017 after a short illness.

Fr Crowley was a former curate in St Peter’s Parish between 1965 and 1975.

Fr Crowley was born on January 15th, 1929 at St Joseph’s Hillhead Glasgow Mullabrack, County Armagh to parents William and Annie Crowley.

He was educated at St Patrick’s College Armagh between 1941 and 1946 and St Patrick’s College Maynooth between 1946 and 1953.

He was ordained on June 21st, 1953 in Maynooth.

Fr Crowley served as curate in Termonfeckin between 1955 and 1965 before moving to St Peter’s in Drogheda where he worked as curate between 1965 and 1975.

He also served in Brentwood, Carrickmore and Killeeshill where he was parish priest.

He was an ardent believer in the co-operative movement and, with encouragement from the major Trade Unions in Drogheda, he approached and received permission from his superiors to form Drogheda Credit Union, which commenced operations in 1967.

The team of volunteers he brought together from all walks of life was truly outstanding and ensured a safe passage for Credit Union during critical times.

During this period he also initiated the formation of the Community Services which has done very commendable work in our town and district.

Through his vision and hard work during his brief tenure, he always preached the ideals of self help and in visitations gave hope and comfort to the aged and the needy.

His legacy to the welfare of the Drogheda community going back over 50 years is immeasurable.

May he Rest in Peace.
