Public health hazard fears if estate issue is not tackled

- By HUBERT MURPHY The scene in Meadowview last week.

RESIDENTS in a southside estate are having to endure walking through overflowing sewerage, sparking fears of a public health hazard in the area.

A major fault with a manhole in the estate has spewed sewerage all over the footpath and road - for the second time in recent weeks.

‘An absolutely shocking image confronted the residents of Meadowview with sewerage overflowing from early in the morning onto the footpath and public road,’ Cllr Tommy Byrne stated this week.

He wants a permanent end to the scenario. ‘I am calling on Louth County Council to put the cameras down, publicy identify the problem and fix it once and for all,’ he remarked.

In November, he reported an identical incident.

Parents bringing their children to the local primary school at Bryanstown and students at Scared Heart Secondary School ended up walking through the sewerage, not realising what was there.

‘With the extremely poor lightning here, many people walked through the sewerage,’ he claimed.

A public health hazard is unfolding in Meadowview, local councillor Tommy Byrne has stated.

He was on the scene last week when a major fault with a manhole in the estate spewed sewerage all over the footpath and road - for the second time in recent weeks.

‘An absolutely shocking image confronted the residents of Meadowview with sewerage overflowing from early in the morning onto the footpath and public road,’ he stated.

He wants a permanent end to the scenario. ‘I am calling on Louth County Council to put the cameras down, publicy identify the problem and fix it once and for all,’ he remarked. The latest incident took place on Wednesday.

In November, he reported an identical incident. ‘A blown-up manhole along the footpath was seeping out large quantities of raw sewerage and toilet paper, posing a most serious health hazard. It was running along the path at the entrance of the estate to Calvary Cemetery.’

Parents bringing their children to the local primary school at Bryanstown and students at Scared Heart Secondary School ended up walking through the sewerage, not realising what was there.

‘With the extremely poor lightning here, many people walked through the sewerage before realising what it was. This is an ongoing problem over the past number of years, in which Irish Water and Louth County Council are fully aware of. In fact over the years, after representations from residents I requested the gullies to be cleared of all debris.

‘In my opinion there is obviously a major fault along the main sewerage line, which must be rectified once and for all, by Louth County Council/ Irish Water, to eliminate this re-occurring problem.

Irish Water told the Drogheda Independent the issue was caused by items, aside from toilet paper, being flushed down toilets.
