Drogheda receives gold medal award

-

THE Drogheda Tidy Towns committee were in Skerries recently to receive their Gold Medal Award in the Tidy Towns Awards.

The committee were thrilled that Drogheda once again won a Gold Medal, which was its primary objective at the beginning of 2017.

Councillor Kevin Callan, Chair of Drogheda Tidy Towns Committee praised the people of Drogheda for helping their town earn this prestigious award and recognised the level of community spirit which has seen a huge increase in the number of groups which are actively involved in cleaning up many areas of the town.

‘We would also like to thank our volunteers, the local Green Schools, Residents Associations, businesses and the outdoor staff of Louth County Council for all their hard work in keeping the town looking its best,’ he said.

He also explained that the committee’s goal at the beginning of 2017 was to retain our Gold Medal and to increase its marks.

‘ To achieve both goals is very satisfying and reflects very positively on Drogheda in advance of the arrival of the Fleadh next year’.

He also believes that the level of community spirit being shown is making Drogheda a better place in which to live, work and visit.

There has been a clear increase in the level of tourism in the area and the level of cooperation right across the town augurs well in advance of over the 400,000 visitors which are expected next year.

The committee had a very busy 2017 with the highlights being the further upgrade of the Joseph Stanley 1916 Remembrance Garden at the Buttergate and the opening of the Princess Grace Rose Garden at St. Dominic’s Park by Prince Albert of Monaco. Plans for 2018 include a link up with the local Residents Associations to ensure that Drogheda is in pristine condition in advance of the Fleadh, as well as some high profile projects which will bring colour to the towns approach roads.

The committee are keen to engage with any individual or groups who share their desire to improve the appearance of Drogheda and can be contacted through the Drogheda Tidy Towns Facebook page.

It would also like to place on record its thanks to all the local groups who have assisted them during the course of 2017.
