The Hardy Bucks sure to bring crowd to McHugh’s
THE maverick rapscallions of the Hardy Bucks are making their way to McHugh’s Venue over the festive season to bring the ‘Yuletide Buzz’ to Drogheda on Friday 22nd December.
Hardy Bucks is an comedy media series, filmed in mockumentary style and following the fictional exploits of a group of young men living somewhere in small-town Ireland. It started out as a series of largely improvised online episodes, revolving around outrageous characters like Eddie Durkan and ‘Frenchtoast’ O’Toole. A sixpart webisode series went on to win the 2009 ‘Storyland’ competition held by Irish national broadcaster RTE Television from a total of 122 applications.
Several series followed and the boys have also completed their very own Christmas special for RTE. The Hardy Bucks Movie was released by Universal Pictures in Feb 2013, achieving Box Office No 1 on its opening weekend and becoming the most successful Irish film of 2013.
The programme has been compared to ‘ Trailer Park Boys’, a Canadian mockumentary, with Chris Tordoff (aka The Viper) citing that show as an influence. Hardy Bucks is filmed on location in Swinford, Co Mayo, and features several locals as extras and can also be compared to ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, with the characters given the liberty to improvise around the plot lines and dialogue to create the heady mix that makes the show so distinctive and different to any other show ever attempted on Irish TV.
The Hardy Bucks show at McHugh’s Venue on Friday 22nd December is their first appearance in Drogheda. Doors will be at 9 pm and there are a limited amount of tickets available at an early bird price of 15 euro, compared to 20 euro on the night.
