Funding for Louth fisheries projects

FISHERIES PROJECTS IN LOUTH SET TO BENEFIT FROM NATIONAL GRANT

TWO angling developmen­t projects in Louth among those awarded funding from Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Sean Kyne TD, Minister with responsibi­lity for the Inland Fisheries Sector announced the award of funding, to the value of €2.2m, by Inland Fisheries Ireland to 115 angling developmen­t and conservati­on initiative­s as part of its National Strategy for Angling Developmen­t, Salmon Conservati­on Fund and Midlands Fisheries Fund.

Two projects in Louth have been awarded funding.

The first Louth project to be awarded funding is at the River Dee, Cappogue, on Drumcar Weir, the Dee Fish Counter Project 2017 by Inland Fisheries Ireland which will receive €31,467.

The second local project is at the River Boyne, theBoyne Valley Fishing Guides website enhancemen­t - Boyne Valley Fishing Guides which is set to benefit from a €1,950 grant.

Minister Kyne said: ‘I would like to congratula­te the applicants who have been awarded this funding. The projects receiving funding are located in 24 counties across the country.

They include fisheries habitat conservati­on projects as well as the provision of infrastruc­ture and equipment to allow for improved access to angling. Education and youth initiative­s and projects aimed at attracting increased number of tourist anglers also attracted funding.’

He added: ‘ The forthcomin­g addition, in early 2018, of ‘Fisheries Projects Animators’ for Inland Fisheries Ireland will support the implementa­tion of these projects in assisting community organisati­ons nationwide in realising these ambitious angling projects and conservati­on initiative­s over the coming year,’ he added.

Louth TD Fergus O’Dowd welcomed the €31k which will be provided for the Dee Fish Counter Project 2017.

‘ The money will be provided under the Salmon Conservati­on Fund as part of a wider national allocation for developmen­t and conservati­on initiative­s.’

He added: ‘ The local Boyne Valley Fishing Guides Project were also successful and were awarded €1950 as part of the National Strategy for Angling Developmen­t to develop their website.’

The scheme is part of Inland Fisheries Ireland’s National Strategy for Angling Developmen­t.

The strategy aims to ensure that Ireland’s fish stocks and angling infrastruc­ture are protected and enhanced with a view to ensuring a sustainabl­e habitat and delivering the economic, health and recreation­al benefits they offer to communitie­s across Ireland.’

Inland Fisheries Ireland is aiming to grow the angling sector’s socio-economic contributi­on of €836 million per year by an additional €60 million each year.
