Sinn Fein select TD Munster and Cllr Ó Murchú

TWO CANDIDATES FOR GENERAL ELECTION

-

At last Monday’s selection evening held in the Ramada Hotel, Louth Sinn Féin selected their two candidates to go forward at the next General Election.

Imelda Munster who is a sitting TD was selected alongside Councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú who will be replacing Gerry Adams (pictured) who had announced last month that he would not be standing again.

Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú thanked the packed room for their nomination and support and said ‘it’s an absolute honour to be chosen to represent Sinn Féin in the next election. I hope to be a part of bringing about real and meaningful change and that’s what it’s all about. That’s the reason I became involved and that’s the reason we got Arthur Morgan, Gerry Adams and Imelda Munster elected, it’s all about meaningful change and we are on the right road.’

Sinn Féin President and Louth TD Gerry Adams has congratulated Imelda Munster TD and Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú on being selected as the party’s candidates to contest the next general election in Louth.

Deputy Adams announced at the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis in November that he would not be seeking re-election to the Dáil and that he will stand down as party President when a new leader is elected at a special Ard Fheis before the end of February.

Speaking, following the convention at Ramada Hotel in Dundalk, Mr Adams said, ‘The Sinn Féin membership in Louth has selected two excellent republican public representatives to contest the next general election on behalf of the party.

‘I want to congratulate both Imelda and Ruairí. They will have my full and active support.

‘Our job is to continue winning people over to our politics here in Louth. We are about building a party that will transform society on this island. We want to bring about a real republic in which citizens in Louth have access to decent jobs, affordable housing and quality healthcare. This also means ensuring that families in this constituency are not deprived of mental health and respite care services.

‘It is all about equality. It is all about fairness. That is the mission statement of our party.

‘I’ve no doubt that Imelda and Ruairí will do a great job in continuing to fight for the rights of ordinary citizens in Louth.

‘My message to the people of this constituency is to join Sinn Féin. Everybody has something to offer. Get behind the candidates. Let’s make sure that two Sinn Féin TDs for Louth are returned to the Dáil at the next general election.’

Cllr Ó Murchú was nominated by former councillor Kevin Meenan who is a long-time friend and comrade. He defeated Cllr Anne Campbell who was also co-opted onto Louth County Council along with Cllr Ó Murchú last autumn to the nomination following a ballot.
