Louth library service set to be reviewed

-

Councillors heard that Louth library services had the lowest level of usage in the country during a debate over new funding.

The members had been informed that Louth County libraries will receive a grant of €64,645 from the Department of Rural and Community development. There will also be a 25% match funding by the local authority, bringing the funds to €86,000.

CEO Joan Martin stated that the funding will ‘support initiatives commenced under the ‘Opportunities for All’ strategy while at the same time providing for the development of these under a new strategy. She said it would also enable the ‘continued roll out of self service in libraries.’

Cllr. Mark Dearey said he welcomed the opportunity to hear how users were going to benefit from this redevelopment.

He added that library usage in Louth, by head of population, was the lowest in the country.

‘I have no doubt that we can do better and engage the public again with a thriving library service.’

He asked for clarity over ‘rumours’ that the reference section was to be put online, and the public facility closed.

Director of Service, Joe McGuinness said this was not true. He added that the new model for the library service includes such measures as being able to apply for a job in your local library.
