A new survey has revealed that 85% of workers plan to look for a new job in the new year.

The survey, carried out by Osborne Recruitment, revealed that 85% of the respondents will start back to work with the search for a new job top of their to-do list.

A better salary (28%), and a new challenge (20%) are the two main driving forces behind the search, with promotion, location and a complete change of career completing the top five, and over a quarter citing all five as the reason to change jobs. 37% of those surveyed are unhappy and actively looking for a new role in 2018, even though 73% have been in their role for less than three years. Although 79% said that the New Year is the biggest motivation to move roles, lack of confidence, the risk of moving, not knowing where to start and being unsure of what direction to take are the main issues holding employees back.

SHONA McManus, CEO of Osborne, said: ‘Having time to regroup over Christmas and the opportunities that the New Year brings gives many employees the chance to reflect on the past year and make resolutions and plans for the year ahead. In today’s market, candidates may find it difficult to get clarity and direction on next steps, as there are a number of employment platforms available. 9% of those surveyed have not changed jobs within the last 10 years, so for them, finding a new role / company could be extremely daunting. We advise candidates to partner with a career / recruitment expert, to help identify the right job market in their search for the correct role.’
