THE Louth senior hurlers recorded their first competitive victory of 2018 when they had seven points to spare over College outfit DCU in this keenly contested Kehoe Cup match played in Darver on Sunday.

After previous defeats by Wicklow B and Longford, manager Philip O’Brien and his selectors will be particularly pleased with their side’s first-half performance, playing with the aid of the breeze, as it yielded three goals that had them leading by 14 points at the break.

Points from Paddy Lynch (2), Ronan Geoghegan and a sixth-minute goal from Michael Ryan had the home side leading 1-3 to 0-0 on the quarter-hour.

The students opened their account with a point on 19 minutes

before a brace of points from the impressive Paddy Mc Cormack and 1-2 from Geoghegan left Louth further in front - 2-6 to 0-1.

DCU finally found their range with three unanswered points from Dean Whelan, but a goal by St Fechin’s clubman Michael Ryan, his second, had Louth leading by 3-9 to 0-4 at the turnover.

Playing with the aid of the breeze in the second half, the students reduced the arrears with the opening three points and tested Louth keeper Kevin McNally on a couple of occasions.

The home side responded with a point from a 65-metre free by Paddy Lynch and another single from midfielder Mark Molloy on 55 minutes.

Despite conceding a late goal, scored by Jamie Byrne, it was Louth who wrapped up a welcome victory with further points from McCormack and the impressive Molloy, while emptying their bench in the process.

Overall, their physicality was just too much for the relatively slightly built students as Andrew McCrave and Molloy in particular threw their weight into tackles.
