Bliain na Gaeilge particularly relevant to Drogheda Fleadh

-

Dear Sir,

On 20th December last, An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, TD launched Bliain na Gaeilge 2018 in Government Buildings.

Speaking at the event in Government Buildings An Taoiseach said: ‘ Throughout Bliain na Gaeilge we want to celebrate the Irish language and encourage as many people as possible to get involved. Whether you are a fluent Irish speaker, if you are just learning the language, or if you haven’t used your Irish in years, this is an opportunity to improve your fluency, learn more about the language and encourage your neighbours, friends and colleagues to embrace the language in their everyday lives.’

Events will be organised throughout 2018 with a particular emphasis on ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ and St Patrick’s Day in March.

More than 100 groups have already given their support to Bliain na Gaeilge.

Groups can register their events at www.gaeilge2018.ie

2018 Bliain na Gaeilge will be particularly relevant to Drogheda as the Fleadh Cheoil takes place this August.

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann who organise the Fleadh Cheoil, also promote ‘An Gaeilge’

From their ‘Bunracht’ (or Comhaltas Constitution) it reads:

Irish, the native language of Ireland, is afforded a special status in Comhaltas and the

movement is unreservedly committed to its promotion.

Perhaps Community Groups in Drogheda can now start planning their own contributions to ‘2018 Bliain na Gaeilge’

I would like to see Louth County Council take the lead in this by organising a public meeting soon, to accept and coordinate any suggestions. Is mise le meas, Breandán O’Muirí, Elmwood, Drogheda.
