Council acting on complaints from the public over parking

-

LOUTH County Council say that illegal parking is being tackled due to complaints they have received.

‘ The main complaints our traffic staff relate to are unauthorised parking in Disabled Bays, parking on double yellow lines, parking in bus bays and extended parking beyond the time permitted in the bye laws. Parking on footpaths has also become an issue particularly as it inhibits the movement of wheelchair and push pram users,’ a spokesperson stated.

In respect of people parking in estates all day, they added, ‘motorists who drive taxed and insured vehicles (NCT as appropriate) are permitted to park in any public place that is not controlled by measures such as single or double yellow lines or where pay parking regulations do not apply.’

And if people feel they have an issue with a parking fine, etc, it is a matter of getting in touch with the council and appealing it.

‘Like all schemes there is an appeal process and the Pay Parking Scheme provides for an appeal process. Appeal forms are available from any of our customer services desks and the appeal is processed by the back office team in a timely manner.’

They say enforcement outside the pay parking zone is a matter for the gardai and the local authority does not have the resources to patrol the entire town.

A speaker at last week’s meeting stated that his wife is in a wheelchair and that when he came around by Magdalene Street, some 15 cars were parked on the footpath.

‘I would have had to walk on the road with her,’ he stated. Complaints were also made that there was a free car park on Scarlet Street but people still parked on the footpath.
