Juniors a class act thanks to free-scoring McCabe

-

ANOTHER busy week for the basketball players at Our Lady’s College saw some play their first game in their league campaign and some play their last, with three teams enjoying victories.

On Monday the Junior B team continued their unbeaten run in Division 1. They took on Dominican College, Griffith Avenue, in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. A 17-0 lead at the end of quarter one set the tone, with Katie McCabe scoring 14 in the quarter. Big performances from Caoimhe Kearney and Benita Assoua assisted the team in their 45-13 victory.

On Tuesday the Under-19 Senior B team travelled to Donneycarney to play St Mary’s, Killester, in a Division 2 quarter-final. The team struggled with the small court, failed to score in the first half and left themselves 13 points down. They played much better in the second half, but still exited this year’s league on a 26-10 scoreline.

On Wednesday the Under-16 Cadette B side travelled back to Glasnevin to replay their Division 2 quarter-final, which was abandoned the previous week due to light failure. Unfortunately, the lights went out for the team as they too exited their league campaign - 45-18 to St Mary’s. Chantelle Gallagher hit nine points.

On Friday Santa Sabina travelled from Sutton with two teams. The first to play was the 2nd Year Junior C team. Most of this team are new to basketball this season and are still chasing their first win.

However, they had a tremendous start and were 8-0 up at the first break, with Sharon Popoola and Rebecca McGrane scoring four points each.

The sides traded baskets in the second and fourth quarters, but the home side’s domination in quarter three earned them their first victory, 24-10. Dijanan Markovic deserves a mention for her performance on the day.

The last team out was the 1st Year Minor A team. This was the first match in their league campaign and they were very excited, having waited so long to play.

Quarter one saw each side scoring a single basket, with Grace Woods the provider for the ‘College’. The second five players in quarter two scored six points, while keeping Sabina to two, with Nicole Tully, Uyi Aghavbere and Sarah Blake the providers.

The home side put daylight between themselves and the visitors in quarter three, with Niamh Byrne particularly strong under the boards, and went on to record their first win on a score line of 22-6.
