Check out our website page and our Facebook page. SIX members of Ardee-based CuChulainn Archers are now in France where they are competing in the World Cup, but last week began with a Lancaster/ Vegas style shoot held in Cavan.

With the bows and equipment already en route to France by car for safety reasons, several members were left wondering how they could practice for the World Cup without bows. However, in this sport nobody is left out and with an amount of scrounging round, enough equipment was begged and borrowed for the Cavan shoot.

This is actually great practice for the archers since any equipment failure during a shoot will be rectified by others, and so to arrive at a shoot with an unfamiliar bow set-up, different size arrows etc will put anyone to the test.

During the shoot two members had to withdraw, Christina Bathe who is still recovering from a wrist injury and Christy Banks whose compound bow became derailed while shooting. Luckily Christy received no injury, but as specialist equipment is required to put the string back to tension he finished the day by supporting his teammates, and in particular his partner Claudia Heinze.

The day continued with John Dollard putting up a massive fight while using Christy Banks’ previous bow, the junior recurve Brandon Dollard using Ann Marie Murray’s old barebow, Fiachra Judge using a former bow of his own and Christina Bathe sharing her bow with Ann Marie Murray. Adria Quinn had her own equipment as she’s not going to France and Claudia Heinze made use of her own barebow.

Once the Lancaster-style head-to-heads began, various members lost out on winning a place to the finals until Heinze represented the barebow and came second, with Ann Marie Murray - representing the compound women - third.

New courses are opening up now and interested parties are asked to contact the club directly on Facebook at Cuhulainn Archers as the secretary is away at present.

The 23-strong Ireland team now in France includes six members of CuChulainn, namely John Keenan, Deirdre Rogers, Fiachra Judge, Ann Marie Murray, Eamonn Rogers and John Dollard.
