DAR need foster care for dogs

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

DROGHEDA Animal Rescue are urgently seeking foster homes for the growing number of dogs coming into their care.

The local animal charity previously ran an appeal for foster homes but revealed they sadly didn’t get much of a response.

The organisation posted an appeal on their Facebook page, saying they are struggling and need the public’s help.

‘All dogs come with some baggage from their past, and it is indeed traumatic for them to be without a home. We’d like to help them, but we need your help,’ said DAR.

Although the charity works to rehome dogs, it has no facility for housing the animals.

‘We rely heavily on the goodness of people to provide foster homes for our dogs while we seek new homes for them, or we use costly boarding kennels - a cost we cannot recover.

‘We have all shapes and sizes of dogs. Some requiring a home without other dogs, some are known to be good with children, some not known, some good with cats, some not so good with cats. Some old, some young, some just looking for a retirement home.’

Every week DAR receives several calls about dogs needing new homes or dogs found as strays.

The organisation said it wants to help, as all these dogs are at risk.

‘Indeed this is having a negative impact on our volunteers as it’s so heart breaking and soul destroying to stand by, and not be able to offer any hope for these animals,’ said a spokesperson.

Anyone who is available to offer their home to foster a dog for even a short period of time is asked to get in touch with DAR by phoning (041) 9832418 or email info@dar.ie or alternatively send a message through the Facebook page.

DAR provide everything you need for your foster dog including bedding, food / bowls, collar & lead, and will cover all veterinarian costs.
