Boyne set the bar high

-

SOME younger members of Boyne AC had the opportunity to sample the thrills of indoor competition at the weekend, as they took part in Cushinstown AC’s annual Indoor Sports Day.

Without any inclement weather to contend with, these young athletes all put in fine performances, setting the bar high for the year to come.

Tayo Lawrence finished second in the first race of the day, the tiny tots, with Oran Monaghan not far behind, while in the Under-8 girls race Amy McHugh ran well and Nathan Robertson had a super win in the boys equivalent.

Aoife McCabe ran well in the Girls U-9 sprint, as did Leah McHugh in the Girls U-10 heats, while in the U-10 girls sprint it was gold for Chloe Cooney, with Shruti Prasad running well to qualify for her final. Both those girls also contested the U-10 long jump.

Shola Lawrence took an easy gold in the Girls U-11 sprint, while Alex McHugh ran well in his heat of the U-12 Boys race.

Alex Devine made a great return to competitive action with a win in the Boys U-13 sprint, while clubmate Aaron Fennell also took gold in the U-13 hurdles and shot putt and also competed well in the sprint and high jump, finishing fourth in both.

Amelia Lawrence ran well in the U-14 girls race, while Cathal Monaghan took the bronze medal in his U-15 sprint and added a silver in the shot putt to his collection.

Finally, in a fitting end to the day, Lili O’Connor took a well-earned gold in the U-16 hurdles under the watchful eye of coach Colin McHugh, as well as a bronze in her sprint race. Also in action during the week, Caer NiGhibne took a well-earned silver in the North Leinster Schools Cross-Country race.

With the cross-country Season almost at an end, the young athletes from Boyne AC have been taking full advantage of the fabulous new indoor stadium in Abbottstown as they held another training session there on Saturday last. A group of more than 30 athletes and coaches enjoyed a tough but beneficial session as they prepare themselves for the upcoming indoor season.

Boyne AC will hold their inaugural Awards and Presentation Night this Saturday in the Westcourt Hotel at 7pm. All members and their families are invited for a fun-filled evening, with food and DJ on the night. Tickets can be bought at training and on the door on the night.
