Superb Lily lands silver in tournament in Denmark

-

TENURE girl Lily Sheeran enjoyed a fantastic start to 2018 when landing silver at the ISHOJ International Karate Tournament in Denmark the weekend before last.

The competition is regarded as hugely prestigious and is refereed by world-class ranking officials, and with nearly 700 entries from Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, hungry, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, Ukraine and Ireland, the standard of competition was extremely high.

In Lily’s category alone there were 21 youngsters entered and she had to win three consecutive fights to qualify for the final.

The 11-year-old originally entered this tournament to gain experience fighting abroad and dealing with the stress of travel and competition on foreign soil.

The hope was that she’d win one or two fights and take the experience home, but instead she performed above and beyond what was expected.

Her category was open weight and all her opponents were taller and heavier.

In the final she found her opponent’s height and reach difficult to deal with but still fought really well.

Lily’s organisation, IKKU, came third out of the 56 organisations/ clubs that entered and Ireland as a country came fourth out of 16.

Lily fights out of IKKU Navan and would like to thank all the coaches involved in her training - and a special thanks to Martin Clinch who operates behind the scenes organising events, bookings, transport, web pages, IT and more.

Next up for the Tenure girl in the IKKU Open in Tallaght at the end of February.
