Getting the youngsters on board

-

GREENHILLS Bowls Club’s ongoing campaign to encourage youngsters to take up the game continued last Tuesday when they gave a demonstration to students in Drogheda’s Scoil Aonghusa.

All the teachers were very impressed with the mentors giving of their time to show the students their creative skills and principal Edel ni Bhroin felt the demo was a novel and fun experience suitable for all ages and abilities.

Greenhills Juvenile Officer Tom Devin stated that people perceived the game of bowls to be for the older generation, but this is not the case at Greenhills where the age group ranges from nine years upwards. He stressed that bowls can be played competitively or for fun and revealed that any school can participate in a bowling demo by contacting him on 087-7799748 or any committee member.

Greenhills chairman Val Maguire thanked the school principal for allowing the club demonstrate their bowling skills to the students and for their hospitality, with a special thanks to club junior Cain Mc Kenna for organising the day in his school. Mentors who gave of their time on the day were Jack Howell, Eugene McKenna, Alan Thornberry and Tom Devin.

On the club front the juvenile doubles championship will start in a couple of weeks, while members who wish to travel to Killanny BC in the over-55s competition are asked to put their names forward on the noticeboard.

Times of play are as follows: Tonight (Tuesday) - Juniors 7 to 8.15pm, Seniors 8 to 10 30pm; Thursday - Seniors 8 to 10.30pm.
