Deirdre through to quarter final

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

Deirdre O’Kane could be celebrating on the double at the finale of Dancing With the Stars - after it was revealed that she will mark her 50th birthday on the same day.

She revealed recently that the milestone birthday will take place on the same night as the final of the popular RTE show, giving her an extra special reason for wanting to quickstep her way into the final. ‘I don’t feel my age, I never did, it’s just a number,’ she told Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show last Friday. ‘What would you be doing only dancing and getting on with it.’

There are now just six couples left to compete in the quarter finals next week in what is sure to be a tense stand off.

Deirdre and her partner John Nolan wowed the judges with their high octain Chaleston on Sunday night and scored a fantastic 26 points in the process. Judge Julian told the actress she was ‘on fire out there!’.

And the public obviously agree as Deirdre is proving to be one of the most popular contestants in the competition.

Alannah Beirne was the latest celebrity to bow out of the glittering show on Sunday night having narrowly avoided the chop last week in the dance off against Marty Morrissey.

This week there was an extra challenge for the contestants in the form of a group dance-off. Anna, Erin and Rob, aka the Party Rockers, faced off against Alannah, Deirdre and Jake, the Floor Fillers. The competitors had to work together as a team, and The Floor Fillers stunned the judges with their routine earning themselves a top score of 30.

Deirdre, who is known for her high energy stand up shows and performances in everything from Moone Boy to Noble, previously told the Drogheda Independent that she was initially reluctant to take part in the show and almost turned it down.

‘I had sort of passed on it because I had so much else on and have a tour coming up that I need to write a show for but they said to me just go into the studio with a dancer for an hour. So I did and that was it, I kind of got bitten by the bug,’ she revealed.
