Our Lady’s juniors have sights set on silverware

-

ALL three 2nd Year basketball teams in Our Lady’s College Greenhills will contest the upcoming SSA League semi-finals after the Junior C side joined their A and B counterparts in the last four.

St Dominic’s of Ballyfermot travelled to Drogheda for last Tuesday’s quarter-final tie and after quarter one the visitors led 8-6, with point guard Rebecca McGrane scoring four for Our Lady’s.

The second five players to the floor in quarter two were spectacular. Not only was their defence superb in keeping Ballyfermot scoreless, they scored a further six points, four of them being claimed by Olamide Adegoke.

The third quarter was more like the first, an even contest, and so Our Lady’s went into the final period with a 17-14 lead.

A nervous seven minutes followed as Dominic’s scored the next three points without reply, before Sharon Popoola was fouled on her way to the basket and converted one of the two free throws. But again St Dominic’s fought back, scoring a fine basket to take back the lead.

Thirty seconds remained on the game clock when Adegoke once again stepped up and scored the biggest basket of her short career.

Ballyfermot had pocession for the remainder of the game but failed to get the ball over the half-way line, so intense was the home defense and a superb one-point victory - 2019 - was snatched from the jaws of defeat.

The previous day the 1st Year Minor A team were playing in their first quarter-final, which was postponed the previous week because of the snow.

They travelled to Drumcondra to take on Maryfield College, but unfortunately the team had their worst game of the league campaign, failing to score in the first three quarters.

Their defence was solid and as a result they went into the final quarter only 10-0 down. Nicole Tully eventually got the Boynesiders onto the scoresheet and further scores from Neda Totatilite and Sara Jane Hughes gave the team something to fight for.

They played the last three minutes like they played the rest of the season, but in the end time was not their friend and as the clock ran out and they lost 18-12. JUNIOR C: Emily Farrell 2pts; Olamide Adegoke 6; Ciara Coombes 2; Ellen Donnelly; Niamh Gumba; Dijanan Markovic; Rebecca McGrane 5; Aoibheann NiFhearaigh 2; Gemma O’Toole; Sharon Popoola 3.
