MassiveTidyUp forPositivity Week

Last Thursday Drogheda saw a small army of hi vis jackets descend on the Southside of the Boyne in and around St Mary’s Diocesan School as the School teamed up with Drogheda Tidy Towns to do a litter pick for Positivity Week, which runs from March 5th to 9t.

Councillor Kevin Callan, Chair of Drogheda Tidy Towns Committee, said he was delighted to get the call from St Mary’s Teacher Ms Roisin Curtis who was coordinating the students and that this was the second time since December the School has jumped in to help improve the area.

‘Before Christmas, Ms Curtis and the students did a massive litter pick around Mary Street, Millmount and The Donore Road. This week again they have rolled up their sleeves to give us a hand. The cleanup and amount of material gathered and collected by Louth County Council at the School shows they have done a fantastic job. We are loading with St Oliver’s Secondary School next week for another area clean and the help is much appreciated.

‘We are always looking for schools, residents Groups and any concerned groups to get in touch. If we can help we wil,’ said Councillor Callan.

Ms Curtis explained that two years ago a Facebook page was set up, ‘for our school, Humans of St Mary’s Diocesan which focuses on showcasing our students and staff to the wider community in a positive light’.

‘ To celebrate its inception we are organising our now annual ‘Positivity Week’, on 5th to 9th March, which promotes Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing among our school and wider community while raising awareness and funds for Youth Suicide Prevention.

‘For the week, we hosted a number of activities and initiatives including sport, music, talks, fundraising, random acts of kindness and practicing gratitude and above all else smiling.’

Each day had a different theme; Smile, Wellbeing, Gratitude, Happiness and Get Active. For Happiness day we encourage Random Acts of Kindness among staff and students. One of the acts of kindness the Transition Year classes will be involved in is a cleanup of the local area.

It is hoped that this act will have a knock on effect of spreading Happiness and Positivity in the Town.

Cllr Callan concluded by thanking each and every student who gave their time and effort and paid tribute to Ms Curtis for all her work in making such a positive difference in the area.
