LIGHT THE FIRE

The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal, from Drogheda invites people to a special event, on the Hill of Slane on St Patrick’s Day, to pray together on the very spot where St Patrick’s lit the Easter Fire. It will begin at 5pm, with a short drama on the life of St Patrick, followed by Mass at 5.30pm, celebrated by Bishop Michael Smith.

There will also be Eucharisti­c Adoration. This is an outdoor event so people should dress for the cold weather. There will be very little seating at the site, so people can also bring a chair. If the weather is inclement Mass will take place in the church. For more informatio­n, contact the Franciscan Sisters at 041 9830441.

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

This years St Patrick’s Day Parade in the village will start at the earlier time of 2pm, on Saturday, March 17th. The parade will commence at St Patrick’s National School on the Collon Road and proceeding down through the village, ending out on the Navan Road. There will be something for everyone on the day with food stalls, street performers, musicians and marching bands bringing high-octane entertainm­ent and lots of laughs. There will be over 30 floats in the parade and they are asked to take up their position at the school not later than 1.45pm. The parade will be led by the Malahide Pipers Band. There will also be entertainm­ent on the square before and during the parade.

Light refreshmen­ts will be served in the parochial hall after the parade and everyone is invited to attend. Volunteers are needed on the day.

FUN CYCLE

Calling out to all Slane cyclist in the area to come along and take part in the Paddy’s Fun Cycle in Navan on St Patrick’s Day. Thisnovelt­y cycle will start at noon from Teach na Teamhrach on the Trim Road in Navan, and will travel in and around the streets of the town.

There will be a number of spot prizes on the day with special prizes presented to the most appropriat­e dressed man and women. Proceeds from the event will go to Meath River Rescue, and sponsorshi­p cards are now in circulatio­n

EASTER RAFFLE

St Patrick’s National School Slane, Parents Associatio­n have an Easter ‘Eggstravag­anza’ Raffle on Friday, March 23rd and tickets are now in circulatio­n. There are some great prizes to be won with the top prize€500 plus an ‘eggstra’ big easter egg. Second prize is €250 while third prize is a top of the range Beko microwave. There are lots of other prizes including sellers prize. All funds raised go to school improvemen­ts.

SLANE STRIDERS

The Slane Striders walking group have organised a village walk, on Saturday, March 24th. Meet at the church carpark at 10am and walk to Slane Castle for tea/coffee/scones in the new distillery. Members €5, and €10 for non members.

RATHKENNY REVELS

Preparatio­ns are well under way for Rathkenny Revels 2018 under the direction of Tina Price Lynch (musical director) along with her husband Adam (choreograp­her). All shows take place in Rathkenny Community Centre starting on Friday, April 6th. It continues on Saturday, 7th and Sunday 8th as well as the following weekend, Friday 13th, and Saturday 14th, April. Evening shows commence at 8pm with matinees on Sunday 8th and Sunday 15th at 3pm. CHRISM MASS

The annual Chrism Mass will take place in Mullingar Cathedral on Wednesday, March 28th. Bus departs Slane at 5pm sharp. All welcome. To book a place contact Teresa 087 6970421.

Confirmati­on in Slane parish takes place on Thursday, April 26th at 3pm. First Holy Communion is on Saturday, May 19th at 11am. Blessing of the Graves is in Monknewtow­n, Dowth and Fennor on Sunday May 20th, and on the Hill of Slane and St Erc’s cemetery on Sunday May 27th.

SOSAD CYCLE

Now is the time to start training for the big 10th anniversar­y SOSAD Cycle hosted by Slane Spinners. It takes place on Sunday, May 13th, and this year the cycle will start and finish at Stackallen Pitch & Putt premises where there is ample facilities for parking cars etc.

The signing in fee is €20 for the 105km or 50km fun run. Sign in at 8am, start at 9.30am sharp. Helmets compulsory, Soup and sandwiches on return. Online check in at eventmaste­r.ie

GRANGEGEET­H INN

The Grangegeet­h Inn has its official opening this Sunday, March 18th. There will be live music, bouncy castle, children’s entertainm­ent and plenty of fun, everyone welcome.

Bennett’s is the place to be any Thursday night with great live music there for all to enjoy. Musicians and singers are welcome any night to perform. Starting time is 9.30p.m. So, get there early. If you enjoy live traditiona­l music Bennett’s is the mecca for great music and craic.
