ON 13th February last, SN Muire gan Smál, Cartown, Termonfeckin held a very successful Open Evening.
It was very well attended with parents and grandparents coming in to see the fantastic work done by the children. Our new families who plan to join us in September also came to visit.
There was a wonderful atmosphere in the school and every classroom was awash with activity. The school looked fantastic too, thanks to all our dedicated staff. Our ever helpful parent’s council members were in serving tea, coffee and a delicious array of cakes which were baked by many members of our parent body.
On 27th February we had a visit from Caradh O’Donovan who won medals for Kickboxing for Ireland.
She is presently preparing to represent Ireland in karate in the 2020 Olympics. All the children took part in a sponsored activity circuit and then Caradh gave an inspirational talk about believing in yourself and going after your dream. Afterwards she held a question and answer session with the children. We are going to apply for our second active flag in June 2018.
Cartown has a school star in our midst also. Charles Kirwan in 4th class did us proud by winning the Primary School Stars in the TLT on the 20th February.
He is a born performer and did a marvellous rendition of The Vamps “Somebody to You” which wowed the judges. Louis Walsh said we had a future pop star in Charles.
Charles won €1000 for the school and we intend to spend this on musical equipment for the school. We have great talent among our students, this is our 3rd time in the top two in this competition since it began. This will help to encourage future stars in our school. We wish Charles well with following his dream.
We also must mention our other 5 acts who did us proud with great performances on the night, Daisy in 2nd, Saoirse in 4th, Kate and Hannah in 5th and the duo of Abby & Jayne in 6th.
On 8th & 9th March we had a visit from Scott Ziglinski with fantastic engineering workshops for the whole school. Junior Infants to 3rd class did a very active workshop on kinetic energy and made roller coasters while 4th – 6th did gravity fed go-carts. It was extremely hands on and the children learned while working in groups. Well done to our under 13 team in the Credit Union Quiz, they won the first round quiz in a very tight finish which came to a tiebreaker. They represented our school in the regional final on Sunday 11th March in the Nuremore Hotel, and did the school proud.
We are currently taking enrolments for September 2018. Check out our website. – www. scoilmhuirec.ie
