DIFE CREW SHOW OFF THE SKILLS
DEPARTMENTS COMBINE TO PRODUCE A FULL-BODY PLASTER CAST
INSPIRED by their bone-setting practice sessions in class, Drogheda Institute of Further Education’s Pre-Paramedic students have joined forces with the college’s Art and Design, Construction Studies and Engineering students in recent weeks to create a full-body plaster cast of the human form.
As part of this collaborative effort, the Pre-Paramedic group first set about making a plaster mould of a live model.
Based on the model’s frame, the Construction Studies and Engineering students then produced a soldered metal structure around which an Art and Design student built a foam core that could be clad in the initial plaster mould.
With the latter in place, a second layer of plaster was used to seal the first and special effects makeup techniques were finally applied in areas of the face and hands by another student from the Art and Design Department, realistically depicting muscle, tendons and skin.
Using the team-work, problem-solving and communication skills that lie at the heart of the paramedic profession, this innovative collective have thus created a unique model that will survive long after they graduate, serving multiple purposes across several courses in the college.
DIFE is currently inviting online applications for the 2018/2019 courses.
