Efforts made to provide more slipways on the Boyne from Slane

Cllr Wayne Harding has welcomed a very positive response from Meath County Council in relation to a motion asking that more slipways be provided along the river Boyne between Slane and Drogheda.
Cllr Harding said that, “there is provision in place to install 7 slipways along the river Boyne between Navan and Slane . However there is only one access point between Slane and Drogheda. The entrance to the river is at an area known locally as “pass”.
‘ That entrance is only a small distance from the bridge of peace in the town of Drogheda.
‘We need more entrance points. Not just for Meath River rescue and the Boyne fishermen’s river rescue in the event of tragedy but the slipways would also compliment the great work of the Boyne navigation restoration group.
‘ The slipways would greatly enhance tourism opportunities and already the Rosnaree community alert group have identified one suitable spot along the river.’
Cllr Paddy Meade said it was a health and safety issue and the slipways were needed to allow rescue units access.
‘It has massive potential for tourism and especially canoeing.’
He said it would cost €37,000 per slipway.
Area manager for the Laytown/ Bettystown municipal district Fiona Lawless said that the motion would be sent to Meath transportation for consideration.
