Amazing run continues as ‘Well reach the last eight

TRIM CELTIC NEWFOUNDWELL 0 1

NEWFOUNDWELL are still chasing what would be a historic ‘quadruple’ after seeing off their chief league title rival Trim Celtic to reach the Tully Bookmakers Cup quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.

The Drogheda side are involved in a threeway battle for the Premier Division crown and have reached the Kilmessan Shield decider, while they’ve been drawn away to Booth Road Celtic in the upcoming Leinster Junior Cup quarter-finals.

Their sole disappointment all season has been expulsion from the FAI Junior Cup for apparently fielding an ineligible player in the last-16 victory over Ayrfield United, and after making one unsuccessful appeal to the FAI the club have decided not to pursue that matter any further.

However, the ‘Well are now through to the last eight in the North East League’s main knockout competition after proving just too strong for Trim Celtic on their own patch.

The visitors lined out without Alan Murphy (holidays) and Paddy O’Boyle (suspension), but after a first half of few chances the away side hit the front on 43 minutes when Ian Devine swung in a free kick and centre-half Stephen Murphy nipped in ahead of his marker to steer the ball to the Trim net.

John Kermode, who’d come on as a substitute for Anto Burke, almost doubled the ‘Well’s advantage when he went one-on-one with the Trim keeper. A chasing defender got a touch to take the sting out of his shot, but there was still enough pace on it to force the netminder to divert the ball round the post.

In the latter stages Trim looked more threatening, despite Newfoundwell bringing on an extra defender in Kevin Bull, and both Eoin O’Connor and Brian Faulkner struck the woodwork before the latter was denied an equaliser by Ronan Brown’s save.

The ‘Well turn their attentions back to league matters on Easter Sunday when they face mid-table Bellurgan United at home, with the Leinster quarter-final fixed for the following weekend.

NEWFOUNDWELL: Ronan Brown, Daryl McDonagh, Stephen Murphy, Adan O’Connor, Robert Cashman, Codrmac Reid, Dean Carolan (Kevin Bull), Brian Kermode (Ross Reid), Craig O’Connor, Anto Burke (John Kermode), Ian Devine.

• Newfoundwell’s reserve team, who like the firsts are fighting for the title along with Trim Celtic, are also through to the Reserve Cup semi-finals following a convincing 3-1 win over Enfield Celtic.
