St Joseph’s bankers are the real kings of digital

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

THERE wasn’t a mention of offshore accounts or sinking funds when the lads from St Joseph’s Seconday School stole the show at the AIB Build A Bank Challenge final at the RDS.

The team used the theme ‘Bankers of the Caribbean’ and duly struck gold when winning the Digital Specialist award on the day.

Eoghan Ryan, Niall McGinnity, Stan Goodwin, Jake Connor, Shane Lynch and Conor McKenna with teacher Michelle McEneaney combined to deliver some killer punch lines to land the elusive prize.

There was also a superb performance on the day from the team at St Oliver’s CC who also made the national final.

One of the longest running schools programmes for 15-16 year old student across Ireland, the AIB Build A Bank Challenge saw the final 48 teams of the 130 teams that took part battle out for the title at the final hosted by Anna Geary and Jonathan McCrea.

The AIB Build a Bank Challenge is a year-long programme for Transition Year students, giving them the opportunity to run an operational bank while exploring innovation, creativity and business management and marketing.

The programme also encourages students to give back to their school and community, with participating teams engaging with their local communities and a variety of charities including Focus Ireland, the Irish Heart Foundation, St. Vincent de Paul and Autism Ireland.

The AIB Build A Bank Challenge runs throughout the full curriculum year, with a series of regional heats around the country before the final in Dublin. Each participating school exhibited their project at the regional finals, with 6 teams being selected to showcase their bank on stage and move onwards to the final.
