Speeders are nabbed on Beamore Road

SIX PEOPLE CAUGHT USING ‘EXCESSIVE SPEED’ IN LESS THAN 40 MINUTES

-

AN INCREASE in numbers of the traffic unit in the Meath Garda Division has resulted in a number of speeders being caught on the Beamore Road.

The road - which was the scene of fatal accidents and numerous near misses in the past - has been the subject of much debate between the council and the gardai in recent years.

It was revealed that the traffic unit will now be monitoring the area on a more consistent basis.

‘ They got six detections in 40 minutes recently for excessive speed,’ Meath CC Road Safety Officer Michael Finnegan told councillors. ‘Enforcement is the issue.’

Cllr Stephen McKee said that more needed to be done on the road, with a roundabout and rumble strips badly needed.

A number of other locations were also raised, including the junction at the turn down to Mosney.

‘People can’t get across the road here. There is no yellow box and I want a review of the junction and lighting there,’ Cllr Tom Kelly urged.

Cllr Sharon Keogan also said that a review was needed of the junction at the graveyard in Duleek.

She said cars park on the roadside there and it makes visibility impossible for those trying to exit.

‘We need to put up bollards to stop cars parking there. If it saves a life, it will be well worth it,’ she remarked.

There is also a need for traffic calming measures to be considered for Alverno Heights in Laytown due to speeding in the estate, she added.
