Stamullen’s Delaney is bang in form

-

AFTER the bumper weekend of races promoted by Drogheda Wheelers seven days earlier, most local cyclists opted to face the Waller Cup, promoted by Bohermeen Cycling Club, and once again they were in contention for honours.

Like most early season races, it was quite long, with the A1s racing 8 laps, A2s seven and A3s six laps of the 16.5km circuit. Robert Ryan of Swords CC finished third in the A4 race, with Alan Geraghty of Yellow Furze a further two places back.

Following on from his mighty efforts in Rás na nÓg, Drogheda Wheelers man Ciaran O’Connor finished in a strong seventh in the U-14 race.

In the main A1 race, which was over 130km in length, Stamullen RC powerhouse Cian Delaney sprinted to fifth place, which extended his run of top-10 finishes to five consecutive weeks.

Meanwhile, the Cuchulainn Cycling Club League, sponsored by the Bike Station, commenced last Thursday and willl run until early August. This is always a huge attraction to the local riders as it offers some mid-week racing during the summer months.

The host club really made their presence felt, with seven riders inside the top 10. Riders from White River Wheelers of Dunleer took seventh and ninth and Brian Daly from Marble City Cyclers stole top honours and moved to the top of the leaderboard.

Next weekend sees some of the local cyclists make the trek to Kilkenny for the Deenside Cup, which again will see the riders face nearly 150km of racing over the county’s hardest terrain.
