Wheelers duo on song

-

DROGHEDA Wheelers’ Jack O’Donnell proved too strong for Cuchulainn’s own riders in round two of the Cuchulainn Cycling Club League sponsored by the Bike Station and held last Thursday evening near Dundalk.

The northern challenge was just too strong for O’Donnell, with Ralph Ginesi from Newry Wheelers crossing the line first, but second place was not to be sniffed at for the local junior rider and his fellow junior clubmate Ben McCourt Lenehan continued his recent form by sprinting to 11th place.

Elsewhere at the weekend, Stamullen powerhouse Cian Delaney was just beaten in the 127km Tour of the Mournes in Armagh on Sunday, crossing the line in second place. This brings Delaney’s tally to seven in terms of the number of consecutive weeks he has finished in the top 10. With the UCI-rated Rás Tailteann looming in just three weeks he continues to prove himself as one to watch.

Further south in the Deenside Cup in Co Kilkenny, Drogheda Wheelers’ Gavin Byrne put in one of the strongest performances of the season, to finish in sixth place in the A4 race.

Byrne and a few others from the Wheelers will attend the Kanturk CC stage race in Cork next weekend, and with performances like this the Wheelers men could really pull out a performance over the bank holiday.

Meanwhile, the youth cyclists from the North East were also out in force in Dungarvan, where the Connor brothers from Drogheda Wheelers both finished inside the prizes in the Under-14 race. Ciaran Connor sprinted to fourth place, just ahead of his younger brother Seamus in eighth.

There are two stage races over the bank holiday weekend, in both Ulster and Munster, along with the Frank O’Rourke Memorial in Wexford on Sunday.

With strong performances from many of the local clubs over the last week, there could be reason to celebrate a winning performance very soon.
