CLOVERHILL

EARLY starter Club Captain Paddy Malone (8) set the pace in the Friday Open by returning 41 points. Try as they might others failed to match that opening score but true to form there is always one to swoop late and spoil the party. The in- form James Maguire despite a 3 shot loss continued to show that ‘Maguire is still on fire’ as he posted a winning score of 43 points. Third place on 35 pts went to James Taylor (4) who had 35 points.

Silverwood golfer Thomas Farren (14) was the April winner of our €100 bonus for producing the best visitor score returned for the Month of April. The BC Electrics, Dundalk sponsored prize was won by Thomas with a return of 36 points which held firm by a single point from the unlucky 13 who finished a point off that winning total. The Bonus visitors prize will now move onto the Month of May.

DUNDALK

MEMBERS of Dundalk Golf Club get the chance this Friday to start on a journey that could take somebody all the way to playing at Carnousite in July during the week of the British Open. The R&A have establishe­d a nine hole tournament which will see club golfers throughout Great Britain and Ireland battling it out through club and regional qualifiers for a place among the 42 men and women who will tee it up on Saturday, July 14, to play first four holes and the last five holes of the Championsh­ip Course at Carnoustie, Dundalk members can play their nine holes at any time on Friday and even as part of an 18 hole round and the timesheet is now open on the BRS system,. The top man and woman from Dundalk will go forward to represent the club in the regional qualifier at KiIliney Golf Club.

Brian Reneghan was an impressive winner of the first Golfer of the Year competitio­n on Sunday when he was the only player to shoot a round in the sixties. His six under par 66 earned him a four shot victory over Sean Gallagher (20) on a day when occasional heavy showers, a strong wind and slick greens made for testing conditions.

Reneghan, who plays off six, got off to a perfect start when he birdied the first and he followed this under with another birdie at the third but his bogeyed the third, fifth and ninth on his way to a one over par gross total of 37 for the opening nine and a nett score of two under,

Reneghan produced tremendous golf down the back nine with eight straight pars from the 10th before he birdied the last for a gross score of 35 and a nett score of 32. That meant he had covered the 18 holes in level par gross with his six shots giving him that impressive nett score of 66.

Newsam Cup squad member Sean Gallagher shot a two under par 70 to finish second while the category prizes were won by Sean Reidy (4), Donal Curran (12) and Martin McCaughey (20).

The Veterans Prize was claimed by Richard Barry (9) with a two over par 74 while Aaron Grant with a 75 took the gross prize and Cathal Grennan won the day’s Nine Hole competitio­n.

On Wednesday, Ciaran Dunne (12) was the winner of the Open Singles Stableford on countback from Kevin Carthy after both were five points clear of the field following rounds of 38pts.

The Golfing Union of Ireland have selected Caolan Rafferty on a six-man squad to compete at the French Internatio­nal Amateur Open (Murat Cup) in Chantilly from May 25-27. Rafferty has already represente­d Ireland in South Africa and Spain this year. The format in France is 72-hole stroke play with 36 holes played on the final day. The top 40 and ties progress after the second round.

The draws for the club matchplay competitio­ns have been posted on the Notice Boards in the men’s locker room. The preliminar­y round in the Mixed Foursomes is shown in a panel on the top right hand corner of the drawsheet.and is to be completed by May 28. The deadline for the Gents Foursomes is also May 28 while Round 1 of the Harry Walsh is to be completed by June 4.

DUNDALK LADIES

THE RAWSON CUP an 18hole stroke and the first golfer of the year competitio­n was played on Sat 21st & Tue 24th April. As we had placing through the green this was not a medal competitio­n. The conditions were still difficult but some ladies were not deterred by this.

Jennifer Holland had a very good score winning Class A and Joan McKenna another lady on great form and playing very steady golf wins Class C with 74nett.

Mary Cumiskey is a lady to watch this season wins Class B with 75nett. The overall honours
