THE THREE AMIGOS? NO

It was in 1941 that I had my first spin on a bike. It was the uncle’s bicycle.

One had to put one’s leg under the bar of the bicycle as my legs were too short for putting them over the bar of the bike. Fast forward to 1996 when I got my first car. Back in those halcyon days, there was never any problems between cyclists and motorists. Now it seems that a day doesn’t pass without some issue cropping up.

Cyclists of course are the most vulnerable. A new law is coming into force soon, if it’s not already in, which gives the cyclists more safety. Motorist will have to give a cyclist a gap of one metre, and in the case of two cyclists abreast they will get a metre and a half, about five feet. Not before time.

They need that amount of space as a wheel would accidentally wobble. The key here is that the motorist should always show due respect to the cyclist and also pedestrians as well.

Finally, I will just mention a recent experience that I had. Coming out of Harry’s shop in Mornington three cyclists passed by heading in the direction of Donacarney. I was heading to Drogheda via Donacarney/ Colpe. When I caught up with the cyclists they were riding three abreast I instinctively knew that the cyclists would revert to a single file. It did not happen. They stayed three abreast over to the Colpe roundabout and
