CLOVERHILL

IT is great to see that the burden of duties bestowed upon our Club Captain has not impacted one bit upon his golfing ability.

Touched off last Friday week in the BC Electrics Dundalk Friday Open, Paddy Malone (8) made amends as he captured the Murphy’s Bar & Restaurant Meigh-sponsored May Medal. Paddy returned a five-under par nett 65 to earn a countback victory over Eamon Devlin (17). Paul Kelly (6) was third with a nett 66. A level par 70 gave Colin Pilkington (3) the gross.

Club Captain and team Captain Paddy Malone led his team to qualification for the knockout stages of the Jimmy Bruen as they finished in third place at Tandragee. Paddy and partner Terry Taylor were accompanied by Benny Tierney & Justin Byre, Paul Kelly & Paul Owens, Dee McEvoy & Donor Walker and Tom Mullion & Kevin Commons.

Cloverhill now face Armagnac at Tandragee on or before May 21st.

A three-under par 67 from David Pilkington (3) was good enough to win the weekend May singles stableford competition with a score of 42 points. Runner-up was Conor Tierney (14) with 41 points as Attica native Anthony Boden (17) took third place on 39.

Next weekend is a three-category competition with an overall winner and a winner in each handicap category section.

All entries for the 2018 Canal Court Singles Championship and the Carrickdale Pairs Championship must be in the competition box with names and £5 entry fee per person in the envelopes provided by next Sunday.

Linda Parr from Rostrevor Golf Society drew the four-ball lotto numbers on Sunday and they were 1,4, 13, 16. There were no jackpot winners, with Seamus McCoy and Senan Devlin closest.

The 20th Anniversary New Member Offer of £300 for the year comes to a close at the end of May. Membership lasts until March 2019 for those who take up the offer.

The Premier counties John Kelly (19) was in tipp top form on Friday as he produced his best golf for a while to capture the BC Electrics Dundalk Friday Open. A loss of 2.4 from the handicap was John’s punishment for his runaway success after amassing 46 points, 24 out and 22 home to be a clear winner by six points over club secretary Mark Shevlin (13) who finished runner-up on 40 points.

Pearse Murphy (9) - of Greenore - won a three-way countback to be third with 39 points from Martin Gill (28) and Gerard Loye (18). Pearse holds the early May lead for the €100 bonus for the best visitors score each month.

BC Electrics Dundalk Friday Open entry costs members £7 and visitors £12 (inc 2s) and bookings can be made via the BRS system or contacting the club at 30889580.

The back nine green markers produced some good scoring on Wednesday to complete the opening round of competitions as round four of the Byrne Monumental sponsored Wednesday Cup came to a conclusion.

Ciaran Finnegan (28) booked his place in the final as his 23 points just edged out Seamus McParland (11) by a point, with Gerard Loye, Benny Tierney, Terry Taylor and James Coburn a further point in arrears.

Play this week is the front nine white, with James Maguire (winner) and Raymond Kelly topping the leaderboard in this Section One of the four-category competition as we head into round two of five. A player’s best three cards count towards overall victory and a place in the final if it is not already secured by being a weekly winner.

Saturday May 26th and Sunday 27th is the 20th Anniversary Club Classic. The cost is a mere £60 per team of three which will include a substantial goodie bag and a meal. There will be both GUI & non-GUI categories and the competition is 18 holes stableford with the one score to count on the front nine and the best two scores to count on the back nine. There will be six nearest the pin prizes to be won along with the longest drives at holes 3 and 18. Bookings can be made on the BRS or by contacting the club at 30889374 or 30889580.
