RANT!

The “legal extortion” of crippling insurance premiums is threatening the existence of Ireland’s social fabric, including farmers’ marts, festivals and community celebrations, GAA clubs, and even children’s charities. That was the bleak picture painted by a wide range of business and community leaders at the Oireachtas Finance Committee, who implored lawmakers to step up and resolve the crisis. Peter Boland, spokesperson for the Alliance for Insurance Reform, said: “Persistently high, unsustainable insurance premiums are pushing everyday organisations to the brink and denying Ireland the voluntary and business services any civilised society might expect.

The above is extracted from an article by Padraig Hoare in The Irish Examiner on Friday 25th May last. This insurance problem is just one aspect of officialdom and bureaucracy that is crippling the voluntary sector and volunteering in general. Over compliance, over governance, and over regulation are just some of the impositions that leave volunteers scratching their heads and wondering, why should I be bothered? Volunteers and Voluntary Organisations need to take control of their destiny or they will be swamped by those who don’t appreciate or understand what volunteers and volunteering is all about!
