BOYNE Valley Tourism along with Meath and Louth County Councils welcomed representatives of leading UK and international media platforms to experience the ‘ best of the Boyne Valley’ in a three day press trip designed to raise the profile of local businesses.

The trip, which was successfully organised by Boyne Valley Tourism, hosted journalists from an array of UK and international media including The Radio Times, The Sun, leading travel website LoveExploring.com and Holland’s largest newspaper, the Dutch Metro along with Irish based blog Your Irish Adventure.

Michele Whelan, tourism officer for Boyne Valley Tourism, said: “This has been an incredible opportunity for the Boyne Valley. It is a pleasure to work alongside so many willing and dedicated local businesses - we can’t wait to see the results.”

Journalists on the trip were given the chance to experience the area’s most noteworthy highlights, including the brand new €45 million Slane Distillery, the World Heritage site at Newgrange and learnt about the cider making process for Cockagee Cider, an Irish alternative to Prosecco.

The journalists also witnessed the launch of Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in the Westcourt Hotel, Drogheda and discovered the depth of Irish culture in a fun-filled dance and music workshop at Highlanes Gallery.

Over the course of the action-packed three days, the journalists visited Martry Mill and Causey Farm, experienced a tank tour at the Irish Military War Museum, took a walking tour of historic Drogheda and Kells, were the first group to see the new Kells Courthouse, enjoyed the beautiful gardens at Beaulieu House, took in the sites at Newgrange, Bru na Boinne and took a tour of the incredible Slane Distillery.

The journalists tasted local Boyne Valley Flavours at the Central, Vanilla Pod, Scholars, Monasterboice Inn and Tankardstown House before staying the night at the Headfort Arms in Kells and Westcourt Hotel in Drogheda.

Media coverage from the trip aims to attract tourists from around the world to the Boyne Valley and showcase that Ireland’s Ancient East is all about giving our visitors an immersive and memorable experience, one that will make them want to return.

Colette Moss, Louth County Council said: “We very much enjoyed having this group of international journalists over to experience our wonderful Irish culture and music at the launch of the Fleadh. They were extremely enthused by the attractions that we showed them along the Boyne Valley and Ancient East.’
