Crowds out for keenly-contested games

-

THERE was a good attendance of members to watch the keenly contested summer league matches played over seven ends at Greenhills last week.

In the first match Junior Ciara Floyd and Josephine Moran clashed with Marie Maher and Valarie Barron.

Marie and Valerie made a good start, but Ciara and Josephine stayed positive and played some lovely backhand and forehand bowls to the jack to lay down the foundation for a two-shot victory.

In the second match Jack Howell and Val Haggins took on Junior Tadg Reilly and Jimmy Flood. The mat proved difficult for both teams early on but Tadg and Jimmy settled into the match in the third end edging into the lead three up. They maintained that lead to put serious pressure on Jack and Val, but the experienced duo came good in the end to clinch victory.

In the third match Eugene Mc Kenna and Claire Woods were pitted against Junior Megan Devin and Alice Leonard in a hard fought contest. It was nipand-tuck througout and Megan and Alice held the lead for some time, but Eugene and Claire used their vast experience to force a draw.

In the last match of the night John Hurley and Tom Devin were up against the favourites to take the league title in Sean Donnelly and Peter Woods, who started the game brightly and quickly took control in the first two ends to go four up.

John and Tom made a relatively slow start to the game and were struggling to find their rhythm on the mat until the fourth end closing the gap to one.

However, Peter and Sean were playing great bowls combining very well together and taking every shot on offer.

John and Tom tried hard to get something going in the last few ends but to no avail as Sean and Peter played the better bowls throughout the game taking the victory in comfortable fashion in the end.

Stand out performance on the night were Junior Ciara Floyd, Val Haggins, Claire Woods, Alice Leonard and Peter Woods.

Note to all members the draw will take place at 8.30 pm sharp on Thursday, any member unable to attend please contact a committee member as this will allow for the smooth running of the tournament.

Times of play Juniors 7-8.15pm, Seniors 8-15 to 1030pm on Thursday night for the summer months.
