-

LAYTOWN’S new pedestrian bridge will be officially opened next Wednesday, July 9th. The bridge is to be named after esteemed local politician and former Government Minister the late Jimmy Tully TD.

Among the guests at the opening will be members of the Tully family.

‘Mr Tully served his country and county Meath for over four decades, as a councillor, a TD and a Minister. His memory is still held in very high esteem by the people of the area,’ said Labour Councillor Eoin Holmes.

Cllr Holmes proposed that the bridge be named after Mr Tully. ‘People have told me how Jimmy Tully looked after all his constituents, no matter their political persuasion. He is still viewed with great respect by the people of east Meath,’ he said.

A deputy leader of the Labour Party, the late Mr Tully lived on the Minnistown Road. His Dail career began in 1954. He served as a Minister for Local Government in 1973 and as Minister for Defence in 1981.
