Church of St Patrick, Slane rededicated after works
ON Sunday, June 22nd, last Bishop Michael Smith (left) rededicated the Church of Saint Patrick in Slane.
The church underwent extensive renovations during the past few months, overseen by Fr Joseph Deegan PP and the local parish committee. This is the latest development in the long history of the church in Slane, where Saint Patrick lit the paschal fire in the fifth century, marking the beginning of Christian life in Ireland.
The renovations include the building of the ‘Oratory of Saint Ere’, which Bishop Smith dedicated last Sunday.
One of Saint Patrick’s first disciples, Erc founded a monastery in Slane which lasted for at least 600 years until it was destroyed by the Normans.
The homily was preached by Fr Denis Nulty - a native of Slane - and traced the success of the renovations under the criteria of history and tradition, worship and liturgy, communion and community.
At the end of the Mass of re-dedication, Bishop Michael Smith paid tribute to all involved in providing a fitting and dignified place of worship for future generations in Slane.
Richard Hurley was the architect while the altar furnishings were designed by Ken Thompson and crafted by Dave Pricket, the cadle stand and processional cross were created by Angela Godfrey.
Val Ledwith was the builder on the project, the stained-glass was by George Walsh.
