€5k not sufficient

-

A 61-year-old man has been told his offer of €5,000 compensation to a teenage girl he sexually assaulted is not enough.

The accused pleaded guilty to the offence at an address in Drogheda on 19 November last where the 16-year-old victim was babysitting.

He made a voluntary statement the next week.

The DPP consented to the matter being dealt with in the district court and Judge Coughlan was reminded he previously accepted jurisdiction.

However, after reading reports, the judge said ‘I have to confess I’m unhappy about accepting jurisdiction.’

Defence solicitor Paddy Goodwin said the victim and her parents are happy to accept the €5,000 and do not want a custodial sentence imposed on the man who has no previous convictions.

Judge Coughlan adjourned the case to 26 October for a new victim impact statement.

‘My view is that €5,000 is not enough. I want a lot more the next day.

‘ The offer falls far below what I consider appropriate. I understand the parties want it resolved.’
