Trees and hedgerows are disappearing
THE landscape is changing so much around the region.
I was out Donacarney way recently and noticed the huge amount of development that’s going on.
It is great to see houses coming on board, but one thing that’s disappearing at the same time are hedgerows.
One section has gone to make way for development and some locals are noticing it too.
One woman who contacted me said such works should not be undertaken during the nesting season as it impacts greatly on nature at this time of year.
Maybe that’s one some councillors could raise at the next meeting of the Laytown/Bettystown area. Is there a period of the year when hedges can’t be removed?
Another change on the way is on the Donore Road.
We reported last week that permission has been granted for a new four to five storey housing project at the former Kilsaran batching plant close to the bus station.
The permission includes the removal of some trees from the perimeter.
Looking at those trees last week, some are in a poor state, but others are nothing short of majestic.
I feel the healthy ones should be allowed to remain as they give great character to that part of the Donore Road. Up to the council and the developer to agree on that aspect of the development.
In amongst those trees is what appears to be a WWII pill box. It was reported back in 2000 by Geraldine Stout and Munich Reilly that there are 39 in the region and seven in the town. Is this one of them? If it is, it should be protected for the future as it’s a part of our past.
