CLOVERHILL

THE weekend singles stableford competition was very generously sponsored by SUBWAY,1 Francis Street, Newry BT35 8BQ 028 3025 0993 and was played in searing heat but it was little compared to the scorching round produced by Colum Quinn. Colum (26) strung it all together to produce his best ever round of golf of 48 points, evenly spread over both 9’s and is now worried that his four shot loss might cost him dough in his regular fourball. Club Vice-Captain Shane Muckian (20) finished in the runner-up spot with 43 points which was one ahead of Conor Tierney (14) and Kevin Haughey (19) with Conor winning the countback for third place. There was consolation for Kevin in that he won the Front 9 with 22 pts and Anthony Boden (16) with 23 pts won the Back 9. Paul Kelly (6) won the Gross. Thanks once again to SUBWAY, Newry for their sponsorship.

The Darren Clarke singles stableford qualifier competition ended up being the battle of the Shanes, Toale (12) and Muckian (18) Vice-Captain Shane Muckian had finished runner-up the weekend before in the Subway Newry sponsored competition and he must have liked that spot as he decided to remain there for a second week as he lost the last 6 holes countback to the bother Shane after they had both finished with 42 points.will go to Dungannon on OCT 21 to represent the club in the Grand Final with the MS Society Northern Ireland the organization who will benefit from this fundraiser. There was a 3 way tie for third place as Raymond McCumiskey (20) John Joe Hsssard (15) and David Pilkington (2) all returned 40 points with the countback going in the order in which they have been named.

Next weekend we have the very prestigious Holmpatrick Cup Fourball better ball Qualifier with a chance to play in the Grand Final at St Andrews. You must arrange your own partner and play in either of the two Sunday time slots allocated for this event. A Spillassist sponsored Golfer of the Year July 3 Categories Singles Stablefiord will be on for those who do not wish to play in the fourball.

Andrew Forde (17) is proving handy in the club opens as he won his second open competition in recent weeks by winning BC Electrics FRIDAY OPEN number 11 to go with his Green Tee Bank Holiday Open win at the beginning of the month. Andy had 2 points to spare over Graham Moore (17) from Loughgall with a ding at the last proving very costly for Graham because not alone did it rob him the chance of winning the competition but it denied him the opportunity of winning the Monthly €100 Visitors Bonus prize which went to week 8 winner Anthony Murphy (18) with 42 points. Colin Pilkington (3) beat Noel Magill (21) on the countback for third place after both returned 40 points.

Bernie McBride (40) made it a telling winning Cloverhill debut as her 40 points in the company of three fellow lady members all from Co Armagh took part in the BC Electrics Dundalk sponsored Friday Open. Bernie was a comfortable 3 point winner of the competition and is the early July leader for the €100 bonus prize that goes to the best visitor score each month. It took a countback to separate second and third places with Club Secretary Mark Shevlin (14) losing out to Ciaran Brady (16) who had 19 points on the back 9 to pip Mark for second after both players returned 37 points.

Seniors Supremo Frank Ryan (14) must have thought he was back walking Camino de Santiago such were the hot conditions as the Seniors embarked on their 18 hole Golfer of the Year competition last Thursday. Whilst a lot of players struggled in the heat Frank (14) made light of the tropical conditions to return a winning 42 points. Raymond Kelly (16) pulled the plug on Charlie McShanes (21) chances of lighting up second spot by beating him on the countback to relegate Charlie to third.

Thursday July 5 saw 3 quarter finals of the pairs matchplay to see who would join first semi-finalists Brendan Hughes & Charlie in the last four. The surprise result was a 4/2 win for Seamus McCoy & Turlough O Brien over Freank Ryan &Noel Williams but the other two matches went right down to the wire. Club President Pius Tierney and partner Richard Harper clawed their way back from 4 down to beat Noel Magill & Oliver McDonnell at the first playoff hole down the 19th. The top match did not fail to live up to it’s billing being decided on the 18th green as the two Raymond’s Kelly & McCumiskey just edged out John Joe Hassard & Fr Kevin Cullen.

The semi-final draws sees the two Raymonds take on Seamus and Turlough leaving Pius and Richard to do battle with Brendan and Charlie for a place in the final.

Next Thursday it’s back to 12 holes for a Maratime Trophy competition round.

Our own final hole the Par 5 18th was not very kind to us over the weekend because it was there on the final green that we lost both our Junior Cowdy and Rossmore Cup matches. Needing to win the last hole against Portadown in the Junior Cowdy, the half gained only tied the match and we lost out on holes. In the Rossmore Cup we were level going up the last but losing the hole meant that SPA progressed to the next round with a half good enough to see us through which reflects on how tight things were.

Midweek saw a different set of results achieved by our Sam Rutherford and Ulster Cup sides. Only 2 holes down from our visit to RCD our Sam Rutherford team despite the very late arrival of our opponents Mourne quickly went about their work to sail into a comfortable lead to reach the last 8 where they will face SPA at home on July 22 @1pm and away the following week July 29 @ 2pm.

On Thursday night a confident Lisburn side with a 5-2 lead arrived to compete for a place in the last 8 of the Ulster Cup. We had the opening two matches in the bag early and kept up the pressure in the other 5 with some great golfing performances which brought us a resounding 6-1 win and a comfortable passage to the quarter finals where the winner of the Co Armagh v Ballybofey match awaits us.

The Back 9 Green Markers produced a cracking head to head between playing partners Gerard Loye (18) and Raymond Quinn (15) in The byrne Monumental Wednesday Cup. It is Gerard who booked his place in the 18 hole final with a one point winning total of 25 points.

The penultimate round off the Front 9 White Markers saw Benny Tierney secure his place in the 18 hole as his 21 points to his surprise was good enough to earn him first place. Next Wednesday play is off the Back 9 White Markers.
