THE LITTLE TERNS
A handful of little terns have appeared on the Baltray beach for the first time since 2015. There are six nests with eggs. Terns are an extremely vulnerable species.
Lots of birds nest up in trees and cliff faces so they are less in danger than the terns. Terns make their nests on a shingly beach, their vulnerability can be adverse weather and ground predators. When they hatch they are at the mercy of seagulls, even people walking on the beach may accidentally trod on a nest.
Then there are dogs as well. As well as all those threats there is also the gradual change in the geography of the beach. These little birds are up against it. The Louth nature trust are looking for volunteer wardens to help out the volunteers that are currently protecting the terns. Anyone who might like to help can contact Maurice on 0862434874.
GAA MATCHES
It’s a poor state of affairs when people are unable to see GAA matches on RTE.
Many of them are now shown on satellite TV, so denying a lot of people who don’t have those stations the chance to see the games.
The GAA need to look at this again
