SCOIL MHUIRE GAN SMAL

It has been a very busy year at Scoil Mhuire gan Smal. The school competed in the Hurling Shield and both girls and boys football teams reached the Quarter Finals in Cumann na mBun Scoil.

The school achieved a 6th Green Flag for Global Citizenship Litter and Waste. A very successful Coffee Morning and Bake Sale was held to raise funds for the Special Olympics and the St. Joseph’s C.B.S. Secondary School “India Project” which involves former pupils from Scoil Mhuire gan Smal. This event raised funding of €2,320 which also involved contributions from children in 2nd and 6th Classes who received the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. 3rd Class received a Silver Plaque in the Bord na Mona “Eco Ranger Awards.

A very successful “Active Week” was held with the school applying for its second flag. Boxing (non contact) and Tag Rugby proved to be very popular during the year. Children underwent Hurling and Football Training from St. Fechin’s, thanks to Vinny Corrigan and Emma Dunne. Children also attended the Garda Sports Day and received medals for Tug o War. They also competed in the Tullyallen Cross Country Athletics and well done to 4th Class Girls who were medal winners on the day.

For one pupil from Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, it was an exceptional year and having caught the eye of Louis Walsh, Charles Kirwan was the Overall Primary School Winner of “School Stars” in the TLT. Some children also entered the “Handwriting Section” at the Co. Louth Agricultural Show and won Rosettes. In Senior Infants there was a 2nd for Clodagh Johnston and Highly Commended for Josh Black. In 1st Class, Lily Mc Glew was 1st and a 2nd for Brianna O’Reilly. In 2nd Class, Holly Mc Auley had a 1st with her handwriting. Dara Kenny in 3rd Class won a 2nd place Rosette. In 4th Class, Lucy O’ Conallain received a 3rd place Rosette. In 5th Class, a 1st place Rosetter for Christian Keller and a Highly Commended award for Abby Clinton.

As the year drew to a close, the 6th Class pupils had their “End of Year Graduation” and Mass celebrated by Fr. Duffy, received their Attendance Certificates and gave a performance for their Parents. We wish them every success as they move onto Secondary School.

Teach Raithneach has been identified as one of a number of Community facilities that would be suitable as a Community Access Hub for the local Community where there is currently poor or no Broadband available to them. The idea is that Community Members would come to Teach Raithneach to avail of Broadband which would be accessible from within the building or outside in the car park. This would be of particular benefit to students researching projects and businesses. This initiative is progressing well at present.
