FROM Ecuador to Drogheda, dozens of relatives of Thomas Charles Wright arrived by the Boyneside at the weekend to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of the famed sailor.

Botn in Queensborough over 200 years ago, he left Ireland for a life at sea and ended up being a hero of South America, helping to end Spanish rule there.

The Wright name is still big in Ecuador where a naval base is named in his honour.

Last Saturday, naval personnel mingled with crowds for the unveiling of a memorial to the great man, situated on Fiddle Case Pier.

His relatives were treated to a wonderful occasion and were thankful to everyone for the day.

Mayor Frank Godfrey spoke at the event, saying Wright was a ‘ true son of Ireland’ and a hero of South American independence.

‘ This monument is a fitting tribute to Thomas Wright’s memory. As Mayor of the historic city Drogheda, I believe that others will be inspired by his story. Wright was born almost 230 years ago in 1799, and 2018 actually marks the 150th anniversary of his death.

‘I am very proud and particularly pleased that he is being honoured – once again – in his home town. A plaque with his name and details was unveiled here a number of years ago.

‘Many thanks to local historian Eddie Quinn for his painstaking research and dogged determination to make that happen. And thanks to Noel Bailey of the Old Drogheda Society too, for bringing this local hero and his incredible exploits to prominence.

‘ Thank you again to our esteemed visitors, who have made Thomas Wright’s journey in reverse, by coming from South America to Drogheda for this memorable occasion which is a celebration of his life.’

Thomas Wright who helped found the Ecuadorian navy and after whom the naval school is named, led an incredible life – went away to sea aged 13, fought in Bolivar’s revolutionary army, married the niece of a president, fathered 5 children, served as governor and then lived in exile.

‘How much more interesting could it get? It sounds like the storyline of a Hollywood blockbuster! So maybe we will all meet again at the premiere!,’ mayor Godfrey added.
