Port needs more space

-

IF DROGHEDA’S port does not develop hand-inhand with other port projects within the borough, then there was no point in extending the town boundary.

That was the theme of the Mayor, Ald. Peter Moore’s speech, when he spoke to the men who should know, the Deep Sea Dockers, at their annual reunion in the White Horse Hotel.

And the Mayor certainly thinks that the port is as important, if not more important, than any other development on dry land.

But the port needs elbow room too, he told the dockers. “The provision of additional space is essential and there is no point in developing the port if we do not provide space.” The Mayor, as chairman of the Harbour Commissioners, is keeping an eye on developments in the port, particularly with regard to the amount of space available for loadings and unloadings.

And he was boasting too — “I have spent fourteen years as a member of the Harbour Board and one of the things I can boast about is that the Drogheda dockers are the best bunch of dockers in the country.”

He had some sugar too for Lt. Commander George Worn and Harbour Master Bill Hanrahan. “They are doing great work,” he said.

‘ The port has a wonderful record as far as the unions are concerned. We must all be thankful to Mr. Willie Boyle,” the Mayor said.
