THE hard work and dedication of five young people was rewarded last week, when Boomerang Youth Centre & Café in Fair Street, Drogheda, was the setting for the

ESLO (Education Skills Learning Opportunities Programme) graduation.

Out of 14 to start the programme nine months ago, five learners graduated, and their proud families and friends gathered to see them receive their QQI Level 4 General Learning Certificates.

Ben Flanagan, Courtney Gorman, Denise McKenna, Stacey Newman and Saoirse Meenan were the remaining Fab Five, and Paul Rosbotham, Assistant Manager Training Services Regional Skills and Training Centre, was in attendance to present the certificates.

“We are so proud of them all and the hard work they put in, along with their tutors, to get them here today, “said Boomerang Youth Service Coordinatorator Catrina Culligan.

Before handing out each certificate, Assistant ESLO Coordinator Michelle Kerrigan spoke of the qualities of each of the graduates. The only man standing was Ben Flanagan, who Michelle said was a perfect example of someone who embraced education outside the traditional school setting.“He has a passion and belief in his abilities, and he made the right decision for him to leave school early and take this route.”

Courtney, who is pursuing a career in the make-upp industry, was described as ‘a sstraight-talker, who pulls no ppunches’! “But she has a huge heart and she has shone at her work experience,” said Michelle. Denise Mckenna is passionate about tattooing and nutrition, and Michelle says he will go far in whichever she chooses. “She hhas such a creative spark, and a phenomenal knowledge of nnutrition,” commented Michelle.

Presenting her certificate to Saoirse Meenan, Michelle said she was a gentle soul who had bblossomed over the past few mmonths. “To see her in action at ththe DIFE Open Day was amazing,” shshe said, “and her knowledge of aanimals blew us all away.”
