Drogheda Creative Writers invite people to enjoy a bit of local culture on Poetry Trail

-

Walking around Drogheda just got a lot more cultural!

Drogheda Creative Writers is inviting everyone to follow the Drogheda Fleadh Poetry Trail they have mounted in local shops in the past week.

As you stroll the streets of the town centre, a trail of poems by poets from the area will lead you along West Street and Narrow West Street, up Laurence Street, down Peter Street and Shop Street and into shopping centres in central Drogheda.

All you have to do is look out for the golden yellow sheets in windows of shops and cafes to read and enjoy the verses, funny and sad, silly and thoughtful, moving and nostalgic.

Close to 100 shops and 32 poets are taking part in this first Poetry Trail ever mounted in the town.

“We have chosen this,” says Emer Davis, chair of Drogheda Creative Writers, “as the best way of demonstrating to visitors to the Fleadh the great range of creative talent in the town in the literary arts during this festival of traditional music and dance.

“Our thanks to Create Louth for helping us to achieve it and to the enthusiasm of all those supporting and taking part.”

Well-known and recent poets featured include Susan Connolly, Marie MacSweeney, Patrick Dillon, Ciaran Hodgers, Anne Nolan, John O’Rourke, Tomas de Faoite, Emer Davis, Brian Quinn, Nicola Pierce, Leeanne Quinn, Dermot O’Neill, Bob Shakeshaft, Nuala Leonard, Roger Hudson, Maureen Perkins, Richard Noonan, Julie Morrissey, Aidan Morrin, Gerard Byrne, Marian Clarke, Connie McEvoy, Frances Atkin, Polly Richardson, Marguerita Sampson, Catherine O’Donoghue, Sean Marley, Siobhan O’Leary, Maria Sheehan, Des Parkinson, Sheila Hudson, David Newton..

“The idea originally came from Westport and the Fleadh is the perfect time to launch it,” says Roger, one of the poets and authors involved. “It is a huge cultural event, and it is a great chance to display the wealth of artistic talent we have here.”
