Greenhills members treated to brilliant bowling

-

GREENHILLS members were treated to a fine display of bowling in the Summer League Doubles last Thursday night as Peter Woods, Jack Howell and Sean Donnelly open a sizeable lead on the chasing group.

In the first match Jimmy Flood and Peter Woods were up against Josephine Moran and Alice Leonard and it proved to be a cagey affair, with the ladies calling a short jack in the first couple of ends to go four up.

Jimmy and Peter, though, got back into their rhythm and levelled after four ends.

Josephine and Alice were really rattled, and although they briefly recovered to go two up, Jimmy and Peter bounced back again with some inspirational bowls to take the lead by two going into the final end.

With the ladies on the ropes Jimmy and Peter ultimately took the victory in fine style by four shots.

In the second match junior player Ciara Floyd and Gertie Griffin took on Tom Devin and Eugene McKenna and the latter pairing duly went three up after two ends.

However, Ciara and Gertie attacked the head in the next two ends to go three up and then extended their advantage to four as Tom and Eugene squandered gilt-edge chances in the fifth end.

The gap was eventually whittled down to two going into the last end, but Ciara and Gertie remained calm and eventually came up trumps by three shots at the conclusion of a very tactical game.

Junior player Megan Devin and Claire Woods clashed with Sean Donnelly and Jack Howell who took an early three-shot lead, but the ladies weathered the storm to cut the deficit down to one in the fourth end.

Sean and Jack quickly got the gap back to three, though, and although Megan and Claire tried hard they couldn’t get back on level terms and Sean and Jack went into overdrive in the latter stages to complete a five-shot win.

The last match of the night saw Marie Maher and Sadie Campbell pitted against junior Tadg Reilly and Eileen Fitzgerald.

Tadg and Eileen settled into the game the quicker, going two up after three ends, but Marie and Sadie quickly squared the match and took advantage of missed opportunities for their opponents to go two up with two to play.

Tadg and Eileen didn’t throw in the towel, though, and indeed they fought back superbly and played a range of shots to take a three-shot win after a tense finish.

The standout performers on the night were Jack Howell, Sean Donnelly, Gertie Griffin, Ciara Floyd and Tadg Reilly.

Times of play on Thursdays are Juniors 7.15 to 8.15pm, Seniors 8.15 to 10.30pm.

Members should note that the club will be closed on August 16th.
