Drogheda Gaelic League members meet for annual function in the school

-

ALMOST 100 members of the Drogheda Branch of the Gaelic League and their friends met for the Annual Fleadh na Nolaig in the Technical School.

Presiding at the enjoyable supper which preceded the function, was Tomas O Dubhain, Chairman of the League, and present also were the Mayor, Ald. L. J. Walsh, Rev. M. C. Walsh, Rev. J. Lennon, Seamus Mac Con Uladh, Eamon O Murchu and Miss Kathleen Allen ( representative of An Realt).

Speeches, which were in Gaelic, were short but impressive with brief reference in all to the remarkable growth of the League in Ireland and to the part which the Drogheda branch had played in its progress. Seamus Mac Con Uladh, in his address, appealed to the members of the local branch to remain always faithful to the Ideals of the League and to be firm supporters of all that it stood for.

Rev. M. C. Walsh remarked that although it was only on an occasion such as this that he saw some of the League’s members at all during the year, he was very pleased at having them present at this, the League’s best social function. Special tribute was paid to the young female members of the League who had prepared and served the enjoyable tea.

With all speech making at the minimum, the evening was still young when the youth adjourned for the ceili dancing session. The Walls of Limerick, the Haymaker’s Jig, etc., were then the order of the night and the evening continued happily to music supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Carberry.

Also helping to keep the musical end of the function going were Masters Tom Sullivan, Fintan Rafferty and Oliver Doherty. During an Interval songs were rendered by Miss Clare Kane while an exhibition of Irish dancing was given by Mr. Patsy Meade and Miss Sarah Tiernan.
